Earlier Models

Once it was established that the atom is not indivisible, the scientists made attempts to understand the structure of the atom. A number of models have been proposed for the internal structure of the atom. The first attempt to describe the structure of atom in terms of a model was made by J.J Thomson.
                                                          Thomson's Model

On the basis of his experments on discharge tubes, Thomson proposed that atoms can be considered as a large positively charged body with a number of small negatibely charged electrons scattered throughout it. Fundamental Particles of tom was called as plum pudding mokel of the atom.

The electrons represent the plums in the pudding made of positive charge. It is sometimes also called as watermelon model. in this, the juicy pulp of the watermelon represents the positive charge and the seeds represents the electrons.
